HOW TO CHOOSE A DJ MIXING DESK (BEGINNERS)

Writer: Osmar ChicolaOsmar Chicola

When you are a beginner DJ, the biggest problem you encounter is knowing how to choose the ideal table for you, taking into account both the financial aspect and the experience you have already acquired, which although not much, is enough to start your journey.

In my case, I used the Behringer CMD Studio 4a controller board for many years, which initially had support for the Deckadance software interface, previously managed by Image-Line, the same creator of FL STUDIO. However, this software was discontinued because Image-Line probably did not achieve the expected results, since the last version of it was released in 2013. All this forced me to use Tracktor, however, over the years the board began to support outdated drives, so I had no option but to change the board.

With that, I had to define my most important criteria to select the new table and I used several websites that I will not mention here so that the reading does not get too long. Among these websites, one caught my attention because of the way it is set up and the amount of content it has in relation to DJ content, called Digital DJ Tips (here is a tip for those who like and need to be up to date with tables and the world of practical DJs) and from this website the information base of the tables was used to choose the tables that fit within my criteria.

These criteria are based on money and time (Facility). Therefore, these are:

  1. My budget was €1400

  2. Make it easier for me to run without having to connect to the computer

  3. Be as close as possible to the tables found at EDM (electronic dance music) festivals

Using the criteria above, many tables fit, but I selected 3 tables from the STANDALONE category (you can either connect to the computer and use it as a midi controller for the software, or you can use it without the help of a computer using just a pen drive or connected directly to the network, as there is support for this), namely:

  1. Numark Mixstream Pro

  2. Pioneer DJ XDJ-RX3

  3. Denon SC Live 4

It's more than half the price (in this case €770 at the time of writing and posting this article) that I'm willing to pay, with a surprising sophistication and innovation that helped me choose the right table, but very amateurish when I get to the third item of my criteria. To be sure of what I saw and read, I even bought it and my conclusion was the following:

  • Build quality may be inferior compared to other more robust models, which affects durability in performance environments.

  • Although it has basic features, it does not offer advanced features or customizations that professional or experienced DJs usually look for.

  • The layout of the controls/buttons/knobs may not be the most intuitive, which makes it difficult to navigate quickly during presentations, but it's nothing that a person can't get used to.

  • The number and variety of effects can be restricted, which limits creativity during mixes.

I didn't get to test it because I discarded it straight away because it was way above my budget (worth €2049 at the time I write and post this article), but it would be a very viable option, if I had enough resources, since it has a good price tag on the market due to the build quality of the product and the features faithful to pro tables as in item 3.

I looked at the reviews and was convinced by what I saw. It offers me both worlds of the two previous tables mentioned. It comes with built-in speakers like the Numark Mixtream Pro and is very faithful to the tables found at festivals like the Pioneer XDJ-RX3, in addition to making it easier for me to execute my sets and the best part is that it is within my budget.

It cost me €1178 + delivery, I must have spent a total of €1380, all through the GEAR4MUSIC website which did an excellent job arriving at my house the very next day, they are so efficient.

In summary:

The Denon Live SC 4 mixing console is an excellent choice for several reasons:

  1. Sound Quality : Denon is known for its excellent audio quality, which ensures that your mixes sound professional.

  2. Intuitive Interface : The layout and controls are designed for ease of use, allowing both beginners and professionals to navigate with ease.

  3. Versatility : It is compatible with multiple audio sources and formats, making it ideal for different presentation styles, whether DJ, live set or live events.

  4. Advanced Features : Includes built-in effects, loops, and mixing options that can enrich your performances.

  5. Rugged Construction : Designed to withstand use in event environments, with durable and reliable components.

  6. Connectivity : Offers several connection options, facilitating integration with other equipment.

These features make the Denon Live SC 4 a popular choice among DJs and musicians looking for quality and performance in their performances.

I have a video here showing how everything happened, although in Portuguese, but you can activate the translation if you don't speak Portuguese;
